The Sirromet Story
Situated 600-1500 metres above sea level and approximately three hours drive south west of Brisbane, “The Granite Belt is one of the most exciting wine destinations in the country” Max Allen, The Weekend Australian.
The Granite Belt was formed by an ancient tectonic uplift that forced a significant Granite Mass 820m above sea level. Over time, softer rocks and soils have eroded, leaving a clearly identifiable Granite Plateau. Due to its elevation, this plateau experiences some of Australia’s coldest winters. The sub-zero temperatures cause water that has been absorbed in exposed granite boulders and rocks to freeze and expand, forcing mineral particles into the soil. This annual soil enrichment allows local vineyards and orchards to grow the highest quality produce with unique, rich flavours.
Terry and Lurleen Morris
FOUNDERS
Together, Terry and Lurleen have created a lifetime interest in wine. In the early seventies, the couple established a vineyard in Gippsland, Victoria however decided to relocate to Queensland and it was sold without producing one bottle of their own wine. They knew they had unfinished business in the wine industry
Mr. Morris still had a hankering to do something in the wine business and visited many wine regions around the world. He often commented to Lurleen that if someone did something serious about wine close to Brisbane and the Gold Coast that it would be fantastic for the region. On an overseas wine trip Lurleen said to Terry, "You have the perfect place to build your dream winery at Mount Cotton. Why don't you do something about it?"
The Morris family set to work to build the award winning winery we know as Sirromet today.
